Synastry vs Composite Chart: When to Use Each One
Understand the difference between a synastry chart and a composite chart, what each measures, and how to read both without overclaiming.
The Short Difference
Synastry compares two separate natal charts. It shows how one person's planets interact with the other person's planets and houses, so it is useful for questions about attraction, friction, support, and mutual impact.
A composite chart calculates a midpoint chart for the relationship as its own symbolic entity. It is useful for asking what the connection tends to organize, emphasize, or bring into focus when the two people are together.
Use Synastry for Interaction
Look first at close contacts involving the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Saturn, and the angles. Then check house overlays to see which life areas each person's presence activates for the other.
A strong aspect can describe ease, pressure, fascination, or a learning edge. It does not prove compatibility, permanence, intent, or another person's feelings, so read the aspect alongside communication and consent.
Use Composite for the Shared Pattern
In the composite chart, begin with the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, angular planets, and major aspects. Ask what the relationship seems to require when it is functioning as a shared space rather than assigning the pattern to one person.
A composite placement can describe the tone of the connection, but it cannot make a relationship healthy or unhealthy by itself. Real behavior, boundaries, and reciprocity remain the evidence.
Read Them Together
Use synastry to name the points of contact and composite to describe the shared container. Compare repeated themes, then check whether everyday experience actually supports the symbolism.
Use both charts for reflection, not certainty about a breakup, a soulmate claim, a hidden motive, or a promised future.
Questions
Is synastry or composite better for compatibility?
Neither is a complete compatibility score. Synastry describes interaction between two charts, while composite describes the relationship's shared symbolic pattern.
Do both people need accurate birth times?
Accurate times improve house and angle calculations in both charts. If a time is unknown, treat those placements as less certain.
Use the calculator
Two sets of birth details are used for calculation and should not appear in static interpretation URLs.
